Three AI video generators are worth your money right now: Google's Veo 3.1, OpenAI's Sora 2 and Runway's Gen-4.5. They differ less in picture quality than in how you pay and what you get to keep.
Veo 3.1 launched on October 14, 2025. It makes 8-second clips with sound generated alongside the picture, including dialogue and ambient noise, so you are not hunting for a soundtrack afterward. You reach it through the Gemini app and Flow, Google's filmmaking tool. The entry point is a Google AI Pro subscription at $19.99 a month, which also gets you Gemini and extra storage. The top tier, Google AI Ultra, is $249.99 a month and is only worth it if video is your job.
Sora 2 arrived on September 30, 2025, inside a new Sora app built like a social feed, with invites required at first. It also generates synced audio, and its cameo feature lets you put a verified likeness of yourself into a scene. The base model is free with usage limits. The higher quality Sora 2 Pro model comes with ChatGPT Pro at $200 a month, and ChatGPT Plus adds nothing on top of the free tier. Downloads carry a visible watermark, which is fine for fun and awkward for client work.
Runway released Gen-4.5 on December 1, 2025. It is the most tool-like of the three, built into an editor aimed at people who already cut video. The Standard plan is $12 a month billed annually and includes 625 credits. Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second, so that works out to about 52 seconds of footage a month. That is enough to prototype shots, not enough to build a channel on.
One more name deserves a mention. Kling 2.6, released December 3, 2025, added native audio as well, and it is a reasonable alternative if the three above do not fit your budget or region.
None of these produce finished videos. They produce short clips that still need editing, and each generation is a roll of the dice, so budget for several attempts per usable shot.
The short version: if you already pay for Google services, start with Veo 3.1 through Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month. If you want to experiment for free, try Sora 2. If you edit video professionally and want precise control, Runway is the one built for you, but plan on a bigger tier than Standard.
