What an NPU Actually Changes on an AI Laptop

We have not tested this. Written from published specs, prices and documentation.

Every laptop being sold this year has a neural processing unit in it and a sticker saying so. The question nobody answers plainly is what it does for you, so here is the plain version.

An NPU is a chip designed to run small machine learning models efficiently, using much less power than doing the same work on the main processor or the graphics chip. That last clause is the whole product. It is not that an NPU does things nothing else can. It is that it does them without flattening your battery or spinning the fan.

What it actually powers today is a short list, and most of it is already running whether you noticed or not: background blur and eye correction on video calls, live captions and transcription, noise suppression on your microphone, some photo search and editing, and the local assistant features the operating system is pushing.

What it does not do is run the large model you use in a browser. That still happens in a data center. An NPU may run a small local model acceptably, and that is a real and growing use, but anybody implying your laptop now holds the same capability as a hosted frontier model is selling something.

So who should pay for a better one?

If you are on video calls for hours a day on battery, the difference is tangible, and it shows up as fan noise and runtime rather than as a feature.

If you want to run local models seriously, buy memory first. The amount of unified or system memory decides which models you can load at all. The NPU decides how pleasant they are once loaded. People buy these in the wrong order constantly.

If you mostly write, browse and sit near a plug, this is not the specification to pay extra for. A better screen or a bigger battery will change more of your day.

The honest summary is that an NPU is a quiet efficiency feature being marketed as a revolution. Quiet efficiency is worth having. It is just not worth replacing a working laptop for, and that is the purchase the sticker is designed to encourage.
